Insufficient Breast Milk Healthy Solution

young girl with facebpaintI am happy to share my story of my healthy baby who is now almost 6.

After my daughter was born I found that I did not have sufficient milk supply to breastfeed her exclusively. For the first couple weeks of her life I reluctantly gave her formula in a supplemental nursing system so that she would benefit from whatever milk I did produce as well as the skin-to -skin bonding. I knew I did not want to continue feeding  her commercial formula, even the organic kind, and it became apparent that she was not tolerating cow dairy. I made what felt like a bold choice to make the goat milk formula from the recipe in the Nourishing Traditions cookbook.

I had no precedent for doing this, no one who could guide me through, but I was heartened when I spoke with my grandmother who told me that she had never made enough milk to nurse and therefore had made formula for her eleven children. When I asked her what was in it, she told me, “evaporated milk, Karo syrup, and water.” Given that that worked for 11 kids in the 50s and 60s, I felt much better about giving my daughter the wholesome ingredients in the Nourishing Traditions recipe and dove right in.

I did not use the raw milk formula but instead used the goat milk. People often ask about the expense and labor-intensive nature of making formula. To me it was worth the expense and likely ended up being cheaper in the long run. We were on a very fixed income at the time because I was the only one working, and still that expense was manageable. Regarding the time it takes to make the formula, once you get the hang of it, it takes less than 10 minutes to whip up a batch that lasts a couple of days. Again, a worthwhile investment!

I started her on it at 3 weeks of age, and she transitioned beautifully. She ate it up with no complaints and her digestion responded well. She gained weight and grew steadily, and I attribute her continued excellent health to that great start she got. She never had an adverse reaction to any of her vaccines, and to this day she has not been on antibiotics.

I am due to have my second child in April and fully intend to give him this wonderful, healthful start.

Thank you for continuing to share the wealth!
